Scoring the Dressage Test

Horse and rider will receive a score of 1 - 10 for each test movement completed. The closer the team comes to achieving the directive the more points they get. After the test the points are added up and the final score is averaged by the the total points possible. Horse and rider receive their score as both points and percentage.

The tests are created by the American Horse Shows Association (AHSA) and FEI (Federation Equestre Internationale) from the Introductory Level to the Grand Prix. The lower levels have four tests. You must get a copy of each test before you can perform it as you and your horse must work together to achieve as close to perfection as possible. The tests are uniform so that all tests for each level are the same no matter where you perform them. It is important, too, to understand the ideas behind the directives in each test. When you join the AHSA you are eligible to receive copies of the tests and the rules books. The tests are updated every four years to keep the sport fresh and interesting.

The FEI is the international governing body for equestrian sports. The term "FEI levels" means the international levels of Prix St. Georges, Intermediate I, Intermediate II, and Grand Prix. The FEI is also known (in the U.S.) as The International Equestrian Federation.

The United States Dressage Federation is our national governing body. Instructors are certified through the USDF and it also sanctions shows.

Your horse does not NEED to be registered in any particular breed registry! Any horse or pony is eligible to be registered in the AHSA for Dressage. It is one of the least breed exclusive groups for equestrians there is! Great news! Dressage benefits horses of any breed.
